Something fishy is going on there. No AutoX course should put you that close to danger. I'm going to wager that he messed up in an expected way and then tried to save it instead of just going both feet in

Looks to me like he wasn't even on the course racing, he was just dicking around outside of the cones and lost control.

Possibly. That's why I wondered if maybe he lost control on an earlier curve and ended up off course while trying to save it.
I saw a near miss last weekend: someone spun, and instead of stopping he just kept spinning the tires trying to drift out of it (wannabe drifter in a 240sx), nearly hit a fence that should never have been an issue.

Autoclub Speedway parking lot, located inside the big oval. Fontana, CA. That there is riiiight where the finish line/timing lights are for the AutoX course. It's not a big lot, so they use whatever room they got. As a result, this happens. Almost happened 3 weeks ago when I was there, too.

Think so. There were two of them at least, one black one grey. The grey one was the one that almost crashed, I think he was slowest. The black one looked about like I'd expect at first (the 'this is a drift car so I'm the best *spins, hits 4 cones, posts 70 second run*'), but actually got pretty good as the event went on.
